Slipway and Stern Entry Systems with Boat Cradle

PALFINGER's boat cradle is an open and light tubular steel design, which minimizes forces induced by waves and currents. The boat cradle is supported by mechanical load bearing support/drive rails and wheel/bearing arrangements on both sides of the boat cradle structure.

The inside of the boat cradle is fitted with fenders to protect and guide the water craft during launch and recovery. A weaklink mechanism protects the boat cradle against higher forces than it is designed to withstand. The “bow section” of the boat cradle is fitted with an automatic mechanical securing clamp. The clamp is hydraulic operated and equipped with a quick-lock function.

The stern end of the boat cradle is designed for easy and safe access during launch and recovery and to avoid any conflicts with daughter craft’s drive system. The system is also well suited for handling of crafts with multiple outboard engines or stern drives.

Max. Sea State for Slipway Operations

Test and operational use of this Slipway System have been performed in Sea States 3 with mother vessel steaming ahead with low speed.

Safe operations at higher Sea States may be possible but is highly dependent on:

  • Mother vessel heading and speed
  • Mother vessel responsiveness (RAO Profile)
  • Waves and wind pattern
  • Boat driver's skills

Boat Cradle Drive System

Rails on each side of the boat cradle serve as guide and support mechanisms for the boat cradle while it is travelling up and down the slipway slope. One of the guide rails on each side of the slipway slope is fitted with a tooth rack for the drive system.

Longitudinal movements and heave/lowering of the boat cradle is done by hydraulic powered pinion drives mounted on each side of the boat cradle. The hydraulic pinion drive motors are fitted with automatic overrunning clutches, allowing residual energy from the water-craft to be transferred into forward motion of the boat cradle in case the water-craft is approaching the boat cradle with excess speed.

Boat Cradle Elevator

Vertical movements are driven by the two mechanical support and guide rails on each side of the boat cradle. The mechanical support and guide rails (located on the stern of the vessel) guide the boat cradle to the horizontal parking position when the boat cradle is retracted by the rack and pinion drive system.

Slipway and Stern Entry Systems with Single Wheel-Drive Units

PALFINGER’s hydraulically powered, semi-automatic Slipway System consists of several single wheel-drive units in parallel rows. The tilt, height, and distance between the wheels can be manually adjusted to conform to a range of daughter craft hulls.

A daughter craft can engage the slipways at a range of speeds up to seven knots higher than the speed of the mother vessel. When a boat enters the slipway, the overrunning clutches allow free rotation of the wheels in the recovery direction until the boat speed and wheel-drive speeds match.

At that point, the hydraulically powered wheel-drive units will take over under single-operator control and dock the daughter craft safely inside the slipway. End stoppers automatically set the craft in parking and stowage positions and engage the fail-safe brakes on the wheel-drives.

Max. Sea State for Slipway Operations

Test and operational use of this Slipway System have been performed in Sea States 3 with mother vessel steaming ahead with low speed.

Safe operations at higher Sea States may be possible but is highly dependent on:

  • Stern entry arrangement
  • Mother vessel heading and speed
  • Mother vessel responsiveness (RAO Profile)
  • Waves and wind pattern
  • Boat driver’s skills

Slipway and Stern Entry Systems with Quad Wheel-Drive Units

PALFINGER's hydraulically powered, semi-automatic Slipway System consists of several wheel-drive units (quad units) in two (or multiple) rows that rotate on axes to automatically adapt the slipway to the hull shape of a daughter craft during launch and recovery operations.

A daughter craft can engage the slipways at a range of speeds, up to seven knots higher than the speed of the mother vessel with some systems. When a boat enters the slipway, the overrunning clutches allow free rotation of the wheels in the recovery direction until the boat speed and wheel-drive speeds match.

At that point, the hydraulically powered wheel-drive units take over under single-operator control and dock the daughter craft safely inside the slipway. End stoppers automatically set the craft in parking and stowage positions and engage failsafe brakes on the wheel-drives.

Max. Sea State for Slipway Operations

The structural strength of the system is high and is normally not the limiting factor. Test and operational use of PALFINGER Slipway Systems have been performed in Sea States above seven with the mother vessel steaming ahead at low speed.

Safe operations at high Sea States are highly dependent on:

  • Mother vessel heading and speed
  • Mother vessel responsiveness (RAO Profile)
  • Waves and wind pattern
  • Boat driver’s skills

Offshore Pedestal Cranes

High-Risk Operation Features for Wire Luffing Lattice Boom Cranes

PALFINGER’s offshore cranes can be equipped with additional features designed for high‑risk operations. These features are specifically tailored for cranes used in applications where the consequences of potential failures are significant.

One of the major operational risks is a boom fall. In such an event, it is difficult to predict where the boom and load will land. This risk can be effectively minimized by using PALFINGER’s double luffing system, which ensures that a failure in one of the winches or wire ropes will not result in a boom fall or load drop – even under full load and in the most demanding conditions. The system provides exceptional reliability without requiring additional components compared to a conventional luffing system.

Reaching High: The Evolution Of The Loader Crane

Hydraulics as standard

1960s

Redefining something new: In 1959 Richard Palfinger presents his first loader crane with a stiff boom system. In 1964 Hubert Palfinger brings the first hydraulic loader crane onto the market with a significantly extended outreach. In 1968 PALFINGER starts small series production with the first exports to France and Switzerland.

Multifunctional workhorse

1970s

Progress at all levels: In 1971 a patent for hydraulic lifting moment regulation sets new standards in precision and performance, heralding a decade of technical progress. Numerous patents, from hydraulic lifting moment regulation to the mast planting grab and folding main boom, make the PALFINGER loader crane a multifunctional workhorse.

Double success

1980s

Who dares wins: With the Power-Link system, PALFINGER introduces a double lever arm system — both on the main boom and on the knuckle boom. A highly daring step because it is more expensive and complex than a crane without double lever arms because you need additional joints, journals and bearings. In the 1980s, the Power-Link system is a unique selling point. Today, the double lever arm system is standard on loader cranes all over the world.

Electronics on the rise

1990s

Electronics become a game changer: The introduction of PALTRONIC 100 in 1992 sees it replace previous overload systems and enable precise overload protection and precision crane control for the first time. Launched in 1998, Active Oscillation Suppression (AOS) dampens the natural vibrations of the loader crane and significantly improves precise control. The system immediately defines a new benchmark. Initially viewed with skepticism, electronics turn out to be a real game changer.

Green thinking has priority

2000s

It's the details that matter: PALFINGER uses new materials and coatings to increase the service life of the cranes. Cathodic dip painting (CDP), introduced in 2002, not only protects cranes from corrosion, but also keeps them looking good — a decisive factor when it comes to the high resale value of PALFINGER cranes. Following the development of PALTRONIC 50 and PALTRONIC 150, electronic control systems make operation easier, safer and more efficient.

The triumph of electronics continues

2010s

Sharpening profile: In 2011 PALFINGER increases safety during operation with the innovative HPSC (High Performance Stability Control) system. And at the same time ensures that operators can work much more comfortably than before. In 2012 PALFINGER introduces the P-Profile. The lightweight and particularly stiff boom system enables longer outreaches with significant weight reduction and energy savings as a result.

Connected thinking

2020s

Smartly connected as standard: Digitalization gains momentum. The “CONNECTED” IoT platform connects the FLEET MONITOR, OPERATOR MONITOR and Service Cockpit apps. This provides the technological basis for achieving greater efficiency, better predictability and more profitable operation with real-time data. Using SMART CONTROL, operators control the crane tip in all directions and can save crane positions using the memory position function. Since 2025, PALFINGER has even delivered a wide range of its equipment from the factory with a telematics module and the option to transfer data as standard — CONNECTED as a standard. This allows customers to take advantage of digital services directly.

Environmental policy at EPSILON

Our company is underpinned by the forestry and recycling industries. With this in mind, sustainable business and environmental protection are anchored in our company principles. We aspire to achieve the highest quality standards and demonstrate innovation leadership – in our product development activities and in employees’ daily working environment. The aim of our environmental policy is to raise environmental awareness, either reducing resource consumption with each new development or, if consumption remains constant, by improving enhancing our products’ efficiency. Our development activities are always driven by a single, unalterable principle:

LIGHTER, LONGER, AND STRONGER!

We quantify this principle using the weight/reach/lifting capacity ratio (W [kg] / R [m] / L [kNm]). The lower this figure, the lower the raw material input – and the higher the maximum payload of the carrier truck. Whenever we release model updates, this ratio must be lower than in the previous model. If the ratio is the same, the update must at least offer an extended service life, longer maintenance intervals, or lower maintenance requirements.

We provide targeted training to equip our employees with the skills to handle resources responsibly and optimize delivery and shipping processes. This way, they actively contribute to creating a healthy working environment and protecting the world around them.

ISO 14001:2015 environmental management certification

ISO 14001 defines the framework for an environmental management system that promotes continuous improvement of environmental performance. It aims to improve environmental protection, reduce environmental impacts, and implement environmental targets in line with economic and social requirements. Environmental protection and sustainability are firmly established at EPSILON: we meet the requirements of the ISO 14001:2015 standard and constantly strive to better our environmental performance.
