Troubleshooting

Keeping your equipment up and on the road is priority number one.  When using our troubleshooting guide, assisted by our dedicated technical service team, you can feel confident that your liftgate will be repaired correctly and in a timely manner.

NOTE: Always use a digital voltmeter when checking voltage to determine if you have sufficient power to operate the liftgate.

First Step
  1. Check for the cab on/off switch for activation of the liftgate or the on/off switch on the side of the auxiliary battery box if a trailer application
  2. 150 Amp Circuit breaker at the positive post of the battery

▶ Push the tab back in if it popped out

▶ Check the reason for the high amp draw

  • Dead battery?
  • Worn out brushes?
  • Bad ground connection?
  • Direct short?

  1. 15 amp ATC fuse (red) connected to the motor solenoid

▶ Replace the fuse if the metal bar is burned

  1. Check the cab on/off switch wire and control switch wire for pinched areas or broken wires
  2. Check for a tight solid ground connection from the motor ground post to the box of the hydraulic power unit
  3. Check for broken power wire in the solenoid cable:

▶ Unplug the connector at the valve, and stick the voltmeter in the plug

▶ Ground voltmeter (or test light) on the ground post at the motor and activate the down function on the gate

▶ Check each hole; one will light up if the power line is ok

  1. Start the truck and run the engine at a fast idle to charge the battery

▶ If the liftgate starts working, recharge the battery

▶ Test the battery and/or truck/trailer charging system

The Gate is Not Lowering Down

One or both release valves on lift cylinders are not opening up

  • Normally closed valves to prevent lowering gate in case of a failure

  1. Check coils for resistance
    • Voltmeter shows 5.5 to 7.0 Ω ▶ Coil is good
    • Voltmeter shows 0 Ω ▶ Coil is shorted out
    • Voltmeter shows Overload ▶ Coil is destroyed by burn or physical damage
