Research and Development

In the year 2007 PALFINGER invested 13.7 million euros in R&D and the strategic expansion of its development and competence centers.

The joint research and development center for the product divisions PALFINGER cranes, RAILWAY railway applications and CRAYLER transportable forklifts is located at the Köstendorf site in Austria. The company-wide competence centers for electronics and hydraulics are likewise found there. The research and development centers for the remaining product divisions are all maintained at their respective international sites.

For PALFINGER, research and development encompasses product innovation as well as process and service innovation. The expansion of the Lengau plant (Austria) with its new, fully automated hexagonal tube production line for the manufacturing of high-strength, fine grained steel serves as just one example of how PALFINGER implements innovative production processes. The new production line not only raises capacity, but also guarantees even higher quality products and process safety. This has enabled PALFINGER to expand its leadership in technology even more.

PALFINGER has also had numerous occasions to celebrate its innovations in product development. The launching of the new BISON TA series, for example, represented a milestone in the 3.5-ton class. By efficiently combining aluminum and composite fiber materials, PALFINGER succeeded in increasing outreach while maintaining the same deadweight of its aerial work platforms. And in its line of knuckle-boom loading cranes, it has been able to further optimize the ratio of lifting power to deadweight on the new High Performance series by increasing the use of high-strength steel.

When taking all of its product divisions into consideration, the PALFINGER AG holds a total of 48 active patents as of December 31, 2007 – from the Active Oscillation Suppression system AOS on knuckle-boom loading cranes to the automatic set-up leveling of the workman basket on BISON aerial work platforms.
